A recent survey conducted by Blind, an anonymous professional networking platform, reveals that approximately 34% of employees at Apple and Nvidia graduated from Tier-3 colleges in India. This finding challenges the traditional notion that graduates from elite institutions like IITs and IIMs are preferred by top tech companies. The survey, conducted between September 17 and 24, 2025, included responses from 1,602 Indian professionals working in major tech firms.
Understanding Tier-3 Colleges
In the context of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, colleges are categorized as follows:
- Tier-1: IITs, IISc, top IIMs, BITS Pilani
- Tier-2: NITs, DTU, Jadavpur University, and similar
- Tier-3: Other state or private universities
- Tier-4: Overseas institutions
The survey indicates that graduates from Tier-3 institutions are increasingly being considered for roles at leading tech companies.
Emphasis on Skills Over College Pedigree
The survey findings suggest a significant shift in hiring practices, with companies prioritizing skills and practical experience over the prestige of the alma mater. Many respondents from companies like Apple and Nvidia reported that their college background had minimal impact on their career progression. This trend reflects a broader industry move towards valuing technical proficiency and problem-solving abilities.
Comparison with Traditional Hiring Practices
In contrast, traditional financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs and Visa continue to place significant weight on the reputation of the college attended by candidates. However, even within these firms, there is a growing recognition of the importance of skills, with some employees noting that companies are increasingly open to hiring graduates from smaller towns and lesser-known colleges, provided they demonstrate strong technical capabilities.
Implications for Aspiring Tech Professionals
For students from Tier-3 colleges aspiring to build careers in top tech firms, this shift presents new opportunities. Focusing on developing relevant skills, gaining practical experience through internships, and building a strong professional network can enhance employability. Additionally, participating in coding competitions, contributing to open-source projects, and obtaining certifications in emerging technologies can further bolster a candidate's profile.
