The government has approved a nationwide refresher programme that will place nearly thirty thousand Competency-Based Education (CBE) teachers under mandatory training. The initiative marks one of the largest capacity-building exercises undertaken as part of the ongoing restructuring of the country’s education system. According to senior officials in the Ministry of Education, the refresher programme has been designed to strengthen teaching standards as the country continues to transition fully into CBE. The training will primarily focus on curriculum delivery, assessment models, classroom competency mapping, and modern pedagogical techniques.
Officials noted that the exercise will target teachers across both public and private institutions who are currently handling competency-based learning. The refresher sessions will be conducted in phases to ensure institutions do not face staffing disruptions during the school term. Education administrators highlighted that many teachers had previously undergone introductory CBE training, but the refresher programme is intended to bridge gaps identified during the classroom roll-out. The ministry confirmed that the fresh round of training aims to align teachers with updated curriculum requirements, revised assessment tools, and evolving learner-centred methods.
The plan also includes digital retooling, with a portion of the sessions covering technology-supported learning, online assessment systems, and classroom resource development. Officials emphasised that strengthening digital competency is becoming essential as schools shift towards blended instructional models. Teacher management boards welcomed the move, stating that continuous professional development remains crucial for effective implementation of the new education structure. Stakeholders added that regular retraining will help standardise teaching quality across regions and reduce learning disparities, especially during the senior school transition.
The Teachers Service Commission is expected to coordinate the training timetable, identify certified trainers, and ensure that all targeted teachers undergo the programme within the stipulated period. Additional guidance will be issued to institutions regarding attendance requirements and performance evaluation. With CBE now forming the backbone of the country’s schooling framework, policymakers believe that well-trained educators are central to ensuring successful implementation. The upcoming refresher programme is therefore viewed as a major step toward stabilising competency-based learning across the national education landscape.
